Radish Rambo

Raphanus sativus

The microgreen radish. Not Rainbow Radish. Dense sow, snip, eat the same day.

How to sow

Sow surface. Use peat-free coco. Keep the surface just moist.

Germination 1–3 days in the crop record.

Growing

  1. Sowing — Day 0. Scatter seeds densely on 2–3cm moist compost. Press down. Do not cover — radish micro seeds need light.
  2. Germination — Days 1–3. Pale shoots appear within 24–72 hours. Mist daily. Keep in indirect light.
  3. Growth — Days 3–7. Move to brighter light. Keep misting. Stems turn pink-red — distinctive radish colour.
  4. Harvest — Days 7–10. Snip with scissors just above the compost. Use immediately — microgreens don't store well.

Keep at or above 15°C where the crop record sets a floor.

Harvest

First cut around 7–10 days.

Snip with scissors just above the compost. Use immediately — microgreens don't store well.

Common mistakes

  • Harvesting too late — After 14 days, radish microgreens become tough and the flavour turns bitter. Harvest at 7–10 days when cotyledons are fully open and stems are 3–5cm.
  • Not sowing densely enough — Sparse sowing produces a thin, disappointing tray. Sow very densely — seeds should almost touch. Microgreens are meant to carpet the surface.
  • Overwatering — Standing water causes mould and rot at the base of dense micro plantings. Mist daily rather than pouring water. Ensure drainage underneath.

In the kitchen

  • Avocado toast topper — Pile a generous pinch of radish microgreens on smashed avocado toast. The peppery bite cuts through the fat.
  • Egg garnish — Scatter over scrambled eggs, fried eggs, or omelettes at the table.
  • Salad mix — Combine with other microgreens or baby leaves for a peppery, nutrient-dense salad base.
  • Soup garnish — Float on top of any puréed soup just before serving — visual and flavour impact.
  • Sandwich layer — Add a thick layer to sandwiches and wraps for crunch and heat.
