Growing

  1. Sowing — Day 0. Sow 1 cm deep, several seeds in the final pot. Do not prick out.
  2. Germination — Days 7–14. Keep moist. A crust on the compost will stop it.
  3. First harvest — Week 6. Leave the growing tip. Succession-sow every three weeks.

Keep at or above 10°C where the crop record sets a floor.

Harvest

First cut around 6 weeks.

Leave the growing tip. Succession-sow every three weeks.

Common mistakes

  • Transplanting — Dill is tap-rooted and sulks or bolts if moved. Sow in the pot it will live in.
  • One sowing — A single plant is a short window. Heat finishes it. Sow a new pot every three weeks through the season.
  • Not enough light — It stretches into a weak, flavourless thread. South or west sill, or a grow light. Six hours minimum.

In the kitchen

  • Gravlax and salmon — Chop generously over cured or roasted salmon with lemon.
  • Cucumber — Toss sliced cucumber with dill, yoghurt, and salt. Serve cold.
  • New potatoes — Stir chopped dill and butter through boiled potatoes.
  • Beetroot — Dress roasted or grated beetroot with dill, orange, and oil.
  • Yoghurt sauce — Fold into yoghurt with garlic and lemon. For fish and roast vegetables.
